The world is engulfed in darkness! The darkness though in fact no figure has a name, Covid 19. The noval coronavirus is spreading all over the world paralyzing almost all the human structures, social institutions like families, religion and even the modern scientific systems. It creates chaos, unnecessary social disruptions! The darkness of pandemic, darkness of death compel the human beings to be confined to their sweet homes! Nobody knows for certain, amidst a sea of speculation, what the immediate and long-term scenarios are for this prolonged darkness. The whole mankind is groping in this darkness!
The question is: who can save this world from this darkness? Which light can dispel this darkness from the world? Listen the world, listen the humankind! the answer, the only answer is Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord, the light of the world!
Today, amidst the Covid 19 anxieties and anguishes, we celebrate Easter, the feast of Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord, the feast that proclaims the victory of light over darkness, of life over death, of hope over distress and victory of love over hostility. Wish you all a happy Easter!

The message of Easter 2020 is: live in the LIGHT of Christ. Dispelling the darkness of disease, death, doubt, and egoism, Easter brightens the world. The creative power of Easter brings the message of light, life, and hope. The Resurrection gives us a powerful message that Jesus still lives! The Resurrection helps us to experience the presence of Jesus even after his death. See the transformation in the life of the apostles. Resurrection is the key to understanding all the Scriptures. Remember the Emmaus episode. Resurrection helps us understand the crucifixion and death; it helps us understand the meaning of the birth, public ministry, passion, death of Jesus Christ. Listen to the witnessing sermon of St. Peter. Above all, the Resurrection proclaims loudly that Jesus Christ, the risen Lord is the light of the world and invites us to enter into the new Light of Christ!
God is light. The Israelite experienced the light of God in their journey to the land of honey and milk. “…and fire was in the cloud by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel at each stage of their journey”. (Exodus 40, 38) The Psalmist declares: ‘look to the Lord, who answers you and delivers you from all fears, and be radiant’. (Psalm 34, 5) When Jesus reached the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, the evangelist says: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali … the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned”. (Mt 4, 15-16) Jesus Christ during his public ministry reiterated what the prophets had been foretold. He stated: “I am the light of the world”. (Jn 9, 5)
On this Easter Sunday, dear friends, we are again and again proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the light of the world. This is not simply the doctrine of the church; it’s not simply the teachings of the catechism teachers. It’s the truth, it’s the revelation, it’s the very reality of our existence – Jesus Christ is the light of the world. It has to become the inspiration of my life; Jesus Christ has to become the light in my ways. That’s why St Paul reminds us to put on Jesus Christ the light. “…the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the Armour of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ…” (Rom, 13, 12-14)
Easter invites us to put on the armor of light, and to dispel the darkness from our life, from our families, from our world, and to live in the light of Christ. This world, our families, our life could be engulfed in darkness by natural events like flood, wild fire, epidemic, pandemic diseases like Covid 19 etc. It could be in darkness because of human made tragedies like war, religious, cultural riots, quarrels etc. But the more dangerous fact is that the world, our families, our life could be in darkness due to the constant clash of our personal interests in our relations. The moment your interest is in clash with that of your life partner’s, the darkness enters! The moment your personal interest is in clash with the interests of your parents, of your children, of your friends, the relationships will be broken; you will jump into darkness!
Dear sisters and brothers, we are called to be the children not of darkness, but of light. Easter proclaims that we have a God, who is always light, who has the power over darkness, and who is powerful to dispel darkness from our life, families and from this world.
Let us fill our families, our world with the Risen Lord, the light of the world. Believe that everything that happens in our life has a spiritual significance; the Risen Lord is always with us to dispel the darkness form our life. Easter declares that the broken hearted, those who are crushed in spirit will have new life. When your heart is broken when you feel abandoned when you are in the situations like Covid 19 pandemic, when you are out of options, when your pain is great ….. the Risen Lord is there to say ‘do not be afraid, do not cry’.
May the Easter celebration fill your families, fill this world with the light of Jesus Christ. Amen!
